Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

I offer an initial free 20-minute appointment. This is an opportunity for me to find out what you are hoping to get out of counselling, and for you to ask me any questions you may have. It is not a counselling session, but more of an opportunity to speak to one another and to see if we would be a good match moving forward.

How long is the session

Each session is 50 minutes long, ideally, this is the same time every week, however, this can be discussed as sessions can be tailored to your needs.  I understand this is not always possible with life and other commitments.

How Many sessions do I need?

This is a difficult one to answer!! It depends on many factors ( such as the individual’s difficulties). Sometimes people might bring something that can be worked on in 6-8 sessions, others might have many things going on or need to explore in greater depth, and this may require more sessions. Other people might want a few sessions to explore something and feel that’s all that is needed.

There might be other circumstances that may lead to wanting sessions fortnightly. This may be something you wish to discuss with me. There is no right or wrong answer, and this is something I am happy to discuss with you when we meet.

Ways of paying

I do ask for payment 24 hours prior to counselling sessions this can be done by bank transfer. Details will be sent to you by e-mail prior to the session. If payment is not received within this time the session will be cancelled.  If clients are experiencing financial difficulties, please contact me to discuss this beforehand to avoid cancellation.

I can’t make my counselling appointment what should I do

I ask that you can give me 48 hours’ notice. If this does not happen you will be charged the full fee. I understand that things do happen and therefore I am willing to discuss this in individual circumstances.

Are all  the things we discuss in our sessions confidential

As a member of the National Counselling Society (NCS) I work under their ethical guidelines, and therefore have a duty of care. I will not break confidentiality unless I feel it is in the best interest of the client ( I am concerned about their immediate safety, or the safety of others or if I am required by law).

I will always try to have a conversation with you if possible beforehand, and these terms and conditions are explained in the assessment/ contract.

Data protection – How will my data be stored?

I am registered with the ICO, and as such am transparent about how your data will be stored, gathered, shared, and your rights. This will be discussed in detail in our first session.
